Roy Shakespeare Photography
My passion for photography started as a teenager. Drawing and painting just seemed to take so long and be so boring. I started taking pictures of everything that moved - girls at school and friends in bands. I took over the school darkrooms and taught myself. Sarah Moon and Irvin Penn were and still are my inspiration.

Education:
I believe that photography is something you can't teach - you either have an innate eye for composition or you don't. I assisted from the age of 17 and then went to study at Plymouth Art College, where my rebellious side got the better of me and I was kicked out in my 2nd year. Moving back to London, I continued to assist and learn life the hard way by travelling, squatting and being homeless, always ready to pick myself up, dust myself off and start again. But I wouldn't go back and change a thing. My first commission was in 1996: editorial and covers for Dj magazine. Recently I moved to Hertfordshire with my young family.

Artist's Statement:
My personal work came from a yearning to experiment and push some boundaries. Making a contortionist sit still on a box for two minute exposures in my studio in Battersea, armed with my state of the art (!) pin hole camera and boxes of Polaroid. The resulting images inspired me to work with the medium further to develop soft, atmospheric and sometimes eerie images.
