Judith Walker Paintings
Born Leeds 1955 . Moved to London to attend Central St Martins in 1974, and in 1978 went to New Mexico to study for her MA whilst working as a teaching assistant. Returned to London in 1980 and has since lived in Southwark, exhibiting widely and taking commissions. Highlights were a painting for a public space at South Bank University in 1997, and the production of silk banners for the first installation at Peckham Library in 2001. The latter was used to inspire local schoolchildren to do art work, and Judith has followed this by working with children in The Guardian's Big Draw Event for the past five years. To support her art she has also had a career in publishing. This has included working for the Irish music paper Hot Press, forming and running the company which published the cult cartoon magazine Duck Soup and drawing a weekly cartoon for the women's page of The Sun. More recently she has worked for the environmental publisher ENDS, and is now administrative manager for the New Humanist magazine. She now has her studio in Deptford and lives in Rotherhithe with her husband, the journalist and writer Mark Say.

Artist's Statement:
I select colours before painting, choosing them intuitively to reflect my mood, then work quickly, drawing on emotional energy to move thick wet paint around the canvas with my fingers. Most of my work is done as a part of themed series reflecting elements of my life and each work can be viewed individually or as a group of paintings. It is only when the works are complete that I begin to understand what they are about. I then name the series and give each work a title that gives the viewer a glimpse of my inner world but also leaves space for their own perception. Ultimately, I feel my work deals with issues of mortality and our need to embrace the experience of life.
