Jo Connell Applied Art
Born in Derbyshire in 1949, Jo studied ceramics at North Staffordshire Polytechnic, then completed a post graduate certificate in education at Nottingham University. She taught for a total of 26 years in schools and colleges in the Midlands and in Cambridgeshire, always managing to combine teaching with running her own ceramics studio. From 1994 she led the HND Ceramics and Glass programme at North Warwickshire College and in 1999 she left education to concentrate on making ceramics full time. She now exhibits widely in the UK and abroad and works from her studio at home in Warwickshire. Jo is a member of the Craft Potters Association and of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and is a regular exhibitor at the RBSA galleries in Brook St, Birmingham. She has given lectures and workshops in France and the USA as well as many in the UK. She runs occasional courses in her own studio and residential courses at West Dean College near Chichester, West Sussex. Jo makes a range of ceramics includes vessels, sculptural forms and lighting for interior and garden settings. Wall panels and hangings often combine mixed media such as driftwood, glass and metal. Patio tables and water features in exciting colours use “found” and screen printed ceramic mosaic. Each piece is completely individual.

Artist's Statement:
I have worked with clay for many years and like many ceramicists have developed language of expression which is very personal. My working method explores many of the fascinating qualities of clay, the material itself being my major source of inspiration. Subtle colour, texture and form combine to produce surfaces of intriguingly tactile nature. My ideas owe much to the natural world and the work evokes images of landscape, seascape, rock strata and plant structure. I am not able to offer apprenticeships, though may be able to offer studio space for a limited period.
