Eric Zachary Ryder Photography
Born and raised in Rhode Island, moved to the west coast in 1984 for a career in technology. Started with film in the early 80's and have fine-tuned the craft of infrared photography over the years. About 21 pieces of my work is currently featured in a prominent fine art gallery in Napa Valley.

Education:
University of California at Santa Cruz, film and photography studies.

Awards:
I never apply for awards. It's not my style. Art is personal and highly subjective. In my opinion, there are no "winners" or "losers". When art succeeds, the art lover is the winner.

Selected Commissions/collections:
Commissioned for several pieces at Peju Province Winery in the Napa Valley, California.

Single Exhibitions:
"The Illuminated Landscape," at Stave Wine Lounge in Napa, California. 16 pieces. 3 month showing.

Group Exhibitions:
Member of the Blue Heron Gallery in Napa Valley, California. 21 pieces.

"The Illuminated Landscape", exhibit of my work at Peju Province Winery, Napa Valley. 10 pieces. 3 month showing.

Artist's Statement:
I concentrate on fine art imagery using high-end infrared camera technology. The peculiarities of infrared photography lie in its ability to record what the eye cannot see. Though there is no true-to-life color in the image, there is a small amount of what is called "false color", which I painstakingly coax out of the image. The end result is the unique effect you'll see here. Each image is different in the degree and depth of color available, based largely on the quality of light in the sky at the moment it's captured. There is a hidden world beyond that which the human eye can detect. My aim is to capture that alternate reality; a kind of dreamscape that is all around us. There is no computer-generated trickery here. The camera merely changes what you are able to see and lets you see more, while at the same time, seeing less. Each image can take many hours to reach fruition. I process the scene like an Archeologist, carefully sifting through the dirt with a toothbrush, trying to uncover buried treasures without damaging what nature has preserved.
