Artist's Statement:
I am a representational artist who focuses on interpersonal relationships. Each painting, though simple in its use of a one- or two-figure composition, builds to a larger, complex narrative where each character struggles to find himself or the one that will make him complete. My painting expresses the emotions, energy, and strength underlying my experiences as an artist, a husband, and a father. I use oil-based pigments, applying them to oak panels. I prepare the panels by hand, priming them with a marble dust and glue ground, sanded to a silky-smooth finish. I paint with traditional Italian and Flemish Old Master techniques, layering thin glazes of oil paint to produce a glowing, vibrant surface with richness and depth. I earned a B.F.A. in painting with an art history minor from Pennsylvania State University in 1995 and spent a summer semester abroad in Todi, Italy. There, I discovered the masterworks of Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi, who today are my major sources of inspiration. In 2003 I was honored to represent the United States at the Florence, Italy, Bienniale. My work has been featured at the Salmagundi Art Club, Allentown Art Museum, Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College, Hoyt Institute of Art, State Museum of Pennsylvania, and Reading Public Museum.
