Education:
My name is Adèle Vergé. I am a sculptor. I was born in Sète and I am Catalan. I live and work in Perpignan. You will find some pictures of my sculptures on this web site along with detailed captions and information concerning the evolution of my work and exhibitions. I work mostly with clay in the initial stages and then cast using bronze or resin. I also sculpt wood, wax, plaster, alabaster, stone, cellular concrete, marble... I began to study sculpture late in my life, when I retired. For three years, I attended the brilliant lessons of Pascale Aghilon at Perpignan Art School. I have previously worked as a photographer, script-girl, real-estate agent, psychotherapist, writer and many other jobs. My sculptures originate naturally from the shape of the human body. I am faithful to the school of living model. I love fighting with clay in front of a living model. This body of flesh and blood initiates everything in me. It is unfailing, you can stick to reality in the most academic form and from there every door is opened. From variation to variation volumes become more and more simple, the lines become purer, the masses attain a balance and the form tends to the essential: this is the point at which the light vibrates around the statue if you are lucky enough to manage successfully. My method is one of the simplest love: tender and sensuous. In my studio, there is an abundance of embraces: traditional couples, male couples, female couples, parternity, maternity... In each one of these embraces I try to let the emotion and the tenderness come through. What is biog statement ?W

She is Catalane, this is why she is very opened and obstinate, not worrying, in spite of her culture, about current trends. Following her path instinctively, speaking from her heart and her belly, before thinking of schools, classifications, pretentious glossed spirits … ...her couples, made of clay, wood, synthetic stone, are only the infinitesimal, however eloquent modulation of pieces of material almost round like a ball or a canon’s bullet. Originally there is the bloc, the mass, the indistinct geometric, the primary and heavy substance. Here, the sensitive surgery of the modest cavity, the dominated break, the sketched line, gives to the silent clay, to the speechless wood, all the new weight, beautiful like the springtime of the world, flowing like love, heavy like a promess held in the name of species conservation, of our appetites, of our sweaty nostalgias and of our repressed voluptuous delights. ...enlaced couples, buttressed on floor in the celebration of sensuality and most extreme tenderness and yet the less indecent. A sort of serene sensuality lives in those pieces tight like a fist knowing so well to sing passion when this one is stopped at the point preceding physical and mental explosion. Jean Thierry Midi Libre - Montpellier October 1990 Adèle Vergé : the patina of modesty From a sharp vision and gesture she has soon understood that sculptures and statuary are a matter of dialogue between lines and masses, and that chattering must tone down. Every truly loving dialogue wins out of it . Her subjects are from academic inspiration : femininity, couple, maternity. But the battle she is pursuing is the one for the truth (the balance of a gesture, the rightness of an attitude, the validity of one expression ) and the one of sensuality . She dares this sensuality, the profusion of embraces and the sexual details. Nevertheless, the need of showing without aggressing is covering everything with a patina of modesty which implies that we are more in a whispering mood than confessions, the sublimation rather than pirouettes. Her predilection theme is the human figure. But this figure in her hands from evolution to evolution is going towards the essential shape, volume rather than the object. This is well shown in a eight pieces set named "Les évoluantes" Jacques Quéralt l'Indépendant 27 mai 1991 Adèle Vergé : A purified and reinvented realism Adèle Vergé works in the great tradition of sculpture. She accepts reality, not to copy it, but to get inspired from it, to create sensual shapes where light is playing his primordial part to exult human body in a purified and reinvented realism. Here is a real sculpteur who is not denying the heritage of the ancient, adding her own sensibility and her true creation. We are taken by the emotions emanating from her maternity's sculptures, her languorous poses, her hieratic attitude and from the solid shapes where the fullness and the emptiness are amazingly playing together. Jean Carzou Membre de l'Académie des Beaux ArtsJuly Adèle Vergé : Bodies hunt The work of Adèle Vergé is all about desire. It can be derided, unfulfilled or diverted but it stills remains the best source of life. To be convinced we just need to wander around this lexiconstyle work which is of figurative aestheticism while avoiding extremism. Whatever the material is, earthenware or bronze, it slowly vanishes to let the motif out. These voluptuous, shimmering and lively curves reflect a masterly art. Maillol, Violet, Gili (...) The great names of catalan sculpture resound in Adèle Vergé's studio. this is there where she spends most of her time and creates relentlessly. An enchanted world, raw and sensitive at the same time. Translated fromGrégory TubanLa semaine du Roussillon21 September 2000 The fine and subtel sculpturesof Adèle Vergé You must get close and be caught by the smoothness and the delicacy of the work. From a vey academic inspiration, the body, the woman, the maternity, the couple, these small sizes relaese a strong sensuality. It is a kind of praise towards the human body in all is natural beauty. Glorified by the pulp of the fingers in clay, then by the moulding and the cast iron. The sculptress explores her subject in the most traditional way, with the constant préocupation for her truth, but also in a more modern way, stylzing the forms, purifyng the line until sketch. The result is very pure bronzes, of line and balance, that one would like to touch and feel the shape with the hands'palm to appreciate their softness.Adèle Vergé offers another work inspired by Africa and with haughty an proud wifes in remarkable head setting, showing bodies with ethnics attributes and negritudes scars. Half way betwen primitive art and contempory expression, the sculptor succeds in not falling into imitation or plagiarism, fiding her very personal vision from Africa and its people.Extremely polished or with a rougher aspect, Adèle Vergé sculptures release a great sensitivity and are the expression of a tender glance on the body and definitly on the life. Translated fromJean-Michel Colletl'Indépendant23 July 2001 The soul's anatomies and the bodie's curves of Adèle Vergé Lost in the middle of a row of houses and vegetation, the 29th rue des Mimosas shelters the residence and the studio of Adèle Vergé. It is here that some generous and unique work is being created, that a whole crowd of silent creatures made of clay, stone or wood, blooms everywhere in the artist's house and garden, defining the artist territory and accompanying her creativity. A free woman. We can sense her first glance, direct, serene with a distance, a little bit haughty and an amused tenderness. Adèle Vergé 's origin is Catalan, she was born in Sète, she lived four decades in Paris where she worked as a script-girl, assisting the film maker Jacques Baratier Later she was estate agent, then psychotherapist. She approached photography, writing, dancing and singing, while feeding her passion for the arts, going from museums to exhibitions, driven by an insatiable curiosity for the world. But there was no desire to act and to produce, no will to confront the creation. "I was doing something else". Yet when she was nineteen she spent one year at the school of arts of Perpignan, getting a price for her work on ceramic. Its only in her sixties, at the end of 12 years of psychoanalysis, "that is what opened me up to the creation" that Adèle Vergé started sculture. "I never stopped since, an incredible desire unrevealed to me before..." A constant : beauty. She is not searching aesthetic but a real balance for dimensions and masses, an harmony of shapes, a plenitude of the poses. "With clay the gesture is almost natural. It is not only pretty, there is love and tenderness as well." Adèle Vergé does not have any references, even if she admires Marino Marini, Constantin Brancusi and Alberto Giacometti and does not feel interest in Rodin, Claudel or Maillol, she starts a piece without any previous drawing and without inhibition. She has this fascination, since a long time ago for African art. The serie of quasi-Dogons emerges by chance from soft clay. "I never planned to do African art. I very much dislike to calculate ahead of the time, in every way it means ..." Adèle Vergé keeps creating, going from exacting figuration to abstractive stylisation, declining each step of the process in superb variations. The masterpiece is to the sculptor’s image and this is what makes Adèle Vergé a great artist . Statuary of an artist with carnal inspirations A sculpture from Adèle Vergé is not simply about anatomy, neither a model’s reproduction, it is the real palpitation of the flesh, where tenderness, love, sensuality of the glance are posed. When Adèle Vergé sculpts, she is in a carnal relation with her model, the beauty that she gives to the material is the one she guesses, suspects, magnifies. She touches the secrets of the soul with greediness, we could almost say with delight. Even in the African series, Adèle Vergé invents a kindness, a sort of loving compassion, which gives her personage a mysterious humanity close from us. Enlaced couple, maternity, women, men, the nude is here to get to the essential and to find the inner strength, the little vibration, the grace. Each work is a meeting with emotion that this free, generous, sincere, whole artist is offering us like a life’s present. Translated fromJean-Michel Colletl'Indépendant 19 September 2003
