Artist's Statement:
Trained initially as an architectural stone and wood carver, I went on to study as an industrial designer and work in London. Since 1993 I have been producing my own work and undertaking a wide variety of commissions, including more recently Public Art projects. My design training has given me the skills to research and execute a project to the highest of standards. Carving has trained my eye and given me a deep understanding of shape, movement and attention to detail.Shape is really my thing, I tend to establish the balance, movement and rhythm in the underlying forms and ideas first, before concentrating on technical aspects, materials and surface details: lines, pattern or texture. With the aim of breathing life into static inanimate materials, making a meaningful, believable, convincing self contained object that has a credibility, elegance, integrity and quality of its own.My most successful work is a culmination of a number of ideas, observations and feelings expressed as simply and directly as I can. I tend to work within a set of aesthetic principles that are more instinctive than defined, hinting at the natural world as its origins. Using clean, full, voluptuous, feminine, rounded forms, with a good sense of structure and purpose. These ideas have been refined and honed by 25 years of experience from figurative to carving, design and contemporary abstract work.I have extensive professional expertise, skills and experience, and enjoy the variety and challenge that projects bring. I find the demands, interaction and cross fertilisation of ideas stimulating creatively.I work either on my own or in collaboration with other artists and relevant partners to fulfil a brief, depending on the requirements, size and complexity of the project. I enjoy working with architects, designers, structural engineers, producing maquettes, workshops, liaising with local communities, organising, scheduling, running jobs, working to deadlines and budgets etc.
