| I am an Irish artist, resident in Scotland, UK. My formal fine art education was ‘instilled’ by a plethora of somniferous bag ladies and pedagogues. These included the ‘usual suspects’ e.g., Middlesex, Goldsmiths, Wimbledon and Barcelona. In these past ten years though, thank goodness, outcomes have been going more successfully, on my own terms, and that has been as a graphic artist in the European sense of the word. So I make drawings, installations, art-objects and printmaking works – these are original intaglio and digital prints, sometimes they comprise both techniques. This additionally applies to the bookart works I have made. These have been unique works to date though I would like to involve myself at some point in making small editions of such book works. I have made a number of print editions including silkscreen though the majority of these have been intaglio/digital. Richard Noyce features my artwork in a book that is recently published called ‘Printmaking at the Edge’. | |

| You could say that I have O.C.D which is obsessive-compulsive disorder, but it’s of a constructive rather than a destructive nature. I started out loving to make things as a child. I would cut things up and sew or glue them together (quite badly) as I would be in such a rush with my ideas. My mother must have despaired at times, as to what, on earth; I would 'alter' next. Another thing I remember with affection is brushing lines of dust into imaginary ‘spaces’, which my little friends and I, would leap about on, pretending we were this or that person. Grown-ups would want me to do drawings of their children and I did it for a little while but I got bored with it and really I just always liked working from my imagination the most. And that is and has always been my essential modus operandi. I was surrounded by religious images and stories as I was growing up and though I rejected these on an intellectual or rational level - I somewhat absorbed these into my visual heritage. I feel that there is a certain ritualistic aesthetic to my artworks. Art as far as I am concerned has to connect to our experience of being alive in this world. I make artwork about all kinds of experiences. One of my more recent projects that - I am working on, is a series called "Traces in the Wood". These are drawings which I develop using graphite and the computer. I incorporate images from an eclectic range of sources including children’s literature, ethnic cultural histories and also my own hybrid autographic forms that represent different aspects of the hidden ‘self’. The title of this series as well as referring to their appearance also refers to the ephemeral nature of these thoughts or vignettes of experience. Like the dust drawings I made as a kid they are easily ‘blown away’ and as like ourselves end up encased or melded into wood and nature itself. | |
